Muslims, Christians riot in Egypt

ALEXANDRIA, Egypt -- Tensions turned to rioting between Egypt's Muslims and Christians after the funeral in Alexandria of a slain Coptic worshipper.

Nushi Atta Girgis, 78, was stabbed to death during knife attacks on three Coptic churches that left another 15 people wounded in an apparent sectarian attack.

Police arrested a man described as "deranged," who was said to have carried out the attacks. But, the Coptic community claims the government was making excuses for an increase in attacks on them by Muslim extremists, the Britain's Independent reported.

Two days of violence culminated in large-scale clashes Sunday as police tried to set up a security cordon around the Saints Church in the city center. Witnesses said they saw groups of young Christians waving machetes and long knives as they faced police lines near the church.

Police reportedly responded with live rounds and tear gas. A mob of Muslims then attacked the police and the Copts from the other direction but later dispersed.
